Koi Pond Filters for Koi Ponds and fish holding tanks
Unique Up-Flow Koi Pond Filter Design Efficiently Backwashes Without Requiring a Blower
HydroBead™ Vortex koi pond filters are designed and engineered with a similar concept to Hydro Vortex™ waterfall filters with an internal water whirling vortex. Water enters parallel to the radius of the heavy duty fiberglass tank and swirls into a vortex. Centrifugal water motion causes heavy solids settle to the bottom. The water and any suspended particulates then flow up through floating Styrofoam HydroFoam™ beads and out the upper lateral.
HydroBead™ Vortex koi pond filters perform two roles: The first role is performing as a biological filter to metabolize fish's metabolic byproducts and ammonia into nitrate and nitrogen. This is known as the Nitrification Cycle and is performed by nitrifying bacteria living on the individual Styrofoam HydroFoam™ beads. The second role is water polishing by way of micro-filtering. The highly buoyant Styrofoam HydroFoam™ beads micro-filter out suspended solids for clean, clear koi pond water.
HydroBead™ Vortex koi pond filters feature the highest SSA (Specific Surface Area) in their class. The Styrofoam HydroFoam™ beads have much higher surface area than smooth beads. The beads vary in size and work together for superior polishing within the tank. As the water flows upward, the suspended particulates get trapped in the bottom section of the bead pack. When water is reversed in Backwash mode, the downward flow of the water agitates the beads that want to float - this releases all the trapped particulates down and out of the filter. No air blower required!
The multi-port valve controls filtering, backwashing, and bypassing. In backwash mode, the water flow direction is reversed. Water flows out of the upper lateral into and through the Styrofoam Beads and out through the bottom drain and lower lateral. The beads are highly buoyant and stay floating while the water is forced downward through them. Due to the upward flow design, backwashing doesn't require an air blower like those found on down flow koi pond filter designs.
