Why HydroPure™ Filtered Pondless Systems?

The pondless waterfall concept was inventend in Redmond, Washington, in the early 2000s by John Russell - the Founder of Russell Watergardens. The original pondless waterfall was designed using a waterfall filter spilling water into a rock and gravel covered underground sump. When Aquascape later introduced its Snorkel and Centipede components for up-flow wetland filtration, John recognized the units could increase water flowing to the pump in his down-flow design. He photographed his now-famous Original Pondless Waterfall and shared the concept and photo with Aquascape, which subsequently introduced pondless waterfalls to its customers and credited Russell Watergardens with creating the pondless waterfall.

The Next Generation HydroPure™ Filtered Pondless Systems replace the gravel-bed reservoir altogether. Each job is kept separate, so cleaning is easy:

  • HydroSieve™ catches leaves and debris before they reach the pump.
  • HydroChamber™ stores the water and gives you direct access to the pump.
  • 100% of the water is stored underground in one or more HydroChambers™. When the pumps turn off, all of it drains back down, leaving no standing water.
  • Hydro Vortex™ is a backwashable filter that helps keep waterfall and stream water clear.

Water never sinks down through rock and gravel. It leaves the feature through a hidden 4-inch pipe tucked under a rock, so there are no pebble or gravel beds to dig out and no standing water. One system can run a waterfall, a stream, rock columns, urns, fountain jets or a tiered fountain, built by you or your own contractor.

Smart Engineering, Simple Care.

Pondless Waterfall & Fountain FAQ

What is a pondless waterfall?

A pondless waterfall is a waterfall or stream that recirculates water with no open pond and no standing water. With a HydroPure™ system, water flows into a hidden 4-inch pipe between boulders. From there it goes to the HydroSieve™ and HydroChamber™, and the pump sends it back to the top.

How does a pondless fountain work?

Rock columns, urns, fountain jets and tiered fountains spill into a shallow pool ringed by boulders. The water leaves through a hidden 4-inch pipe, passes through the HydroSieve™, and is stored underground in the HydroChamber™, where the pump sends it back to the fountain. When the pump is off, the pool drains completely, so there's no standing water.

Why is a HydroPure™ system easier to clean than a gravel-bed pondless?

There's no gravel bed or rock-covered reservoir to dig out. Debris collects in the HydroSieve™'s removable stainless-steel basket, and the pump sits in the HydroChamber™, where you can reach it. Waterfall kits also include the backwashable Hydro Vortex™ filter.

Can I build one myself?

Yes. Russell Watergardens designs and sells the equipment, and you build the water feature yourself or with your own contractor.

Is a pondless water feature good for a small yard?

Yes. The Ahi Series kit makes a compact 16-inch waterfall, and urn, rock column and fountain jet designs fit patios, courtyards and entryways.
