A dedicated koi pond is fundamentally different from a typical water garden pond.

Koi ponds are designed around the needs of the fish. Instead of covering the pond bottom with rock and gravel, a properly designed koi pond has smooth, unobstructed sides and a bare liner bottom sloped toward a bottom drain. This gives koi open swimming space while allowing fish waste and settling debris to move toward the filtration system for removal.

And unlike a traditional water garden pond, a koi pond doesn't have to be built entirely below ground. It can be in-ground, above-ground, or a combination of both. The construction style can change—the filtration principles remain the same.

Complete Filtration from the Surface to the Bottom

Russell Watergardens' Pond Kits are designed as complete circulation, filtration and aeration systems rather than simply a collection of pond-building materials.

Each system combines:

HydroClean™ Pond Skimmer to collect floating leaves and surface debris
Bottom Drain to continuously draw settling fish waste and debris from the pond floor
HydroSieve™ Bottom Drain Pre-Filter to capture waste before it reaches the pump and biological filter
External Pump for efficient circulation and easy equipment access
HydroBead Vortex™ Koi Pond Filter for mechanical and biological filtration with convenient backwashing
UV Clarifier to help control free-floating algae and maintain clear water

Together, these components continuously move water and waste out of the pond and into equipment designed to remove it.

A Bare Bottom Is There for a Reason

In a dedicated koi pond, the pond itself shouldn't be the filter.

There is no submerged rock or gravel bed intended to collect waste. The smooth pond bottom is sloped toward the bottom drain so fish waste and other settling debris can be carried out of the pond and captured by the HydroSieve™ pre-filter.

Floating debris travels toward the HydroClean™ skimmer, while sinking debris moves toward the bottom drain.

This allows routine maintenance to focus on cleaning and backwashing accessible filtration equipment rather than removing accumulated debris from the pond itself.

Backwashable Filtration Designed for Koi

At the heart of each kit is a HydroBead Vortex™ Koi Pond Filter.

Unlike a waterfall filter used primarily with water garden ponds, the HydroBead Vortex™ provides high-capacity water pollishing and biological filtration in an external, backwashable filter specifically suited to koi pond applications.

The filter, pump, pre-filter, UV clarifier and aeration equipment are all located outside the koi pond, where they can be accessed for routine maintenance without disturbing the fish or dismantling the pond.

Build the Koi Pond You Want

The same filtration principles can be used with many different styles of koi pond.

Build a traditional in-ground koi pond. Raise part or all of the pond above grade. Incorporate a formal architectural design or create something that blends naturally into the surrounding landscape.
