Backwashing the Marlin Hydro Vortex™ Medium Waterfall Filter
Hydro Vortex™ waterfall filters combine high surface area media, a vortex solids separator, settling cone with a bottom drain for complete and efficient backwashing. Hydro Vortex™ waterfall filters do not require blowers or air pumps for backwashing.
The Marlin Hydro Vortex™ medium waterfall filter is the mid-size of the industry-leading Patented Hydro Vortex™ series of completely backwashable biological waterfall filters. Invented by John Russell, a Hydro Vortex™ medium waterfall filter is cleaned simply by opening its included drain valve and reversing water flow through the filter. This can be done either manually or mechanically with our exclusive HydroFlush™ Backwash System.
The HydroFlush™ option uses your existing pump and the included 3-way valve to reverse water flow through the filter. Cleaning a Marlin Hydro Vortex™ filter with the HydroFlush™ system is as easy as turning two valves!
The dirty water exiting the filter's drain pipe is loaded with nutrients! Use this backwash water to organically fertilize your landscape and gardens.
Hydro Vortex™ waterfall filters are designed for periodic gentle back-flushing of fish waste, mulm and detritus instead of the massive disruptive heavy annual pressure washer cleaning required for typical "Pad-&-Media-Bag" type waterfall filter boxes. Don’t be misled by the claims that say biological waterfall filters only need "annual cleaning" – the health of your fish may be at stake. All medium waterfall filters, no matter what type or brand, benefit from periodic rinsing of fish waste, mulm, and detritus.
Commonplace “Pad-&-Media-Bag” type waterfall filters are not designed with bottom clean out drains for ease of cleaning and routine gentle back-flushing. Soiled waterfall filters can cause poor water quality and can encourage algae growth and fish disease.
Biological waterfall filters – of any kind or brand – that are not periodically back-flushed will eventually plug with fish waste, mulm and detritus (the build-up of fish and bacterial waste that looks like brown goop).
If the fish waste, mulm and detritus isn’t periodically back-flushed it can clog the filter media – no matter what type. Clogged filter media can cause the water to start “channeling” around the filter media within the filter. This means that water is finding a path of least resistance around the clogged media.
Water that channels around the filter media isn't being filtered. Water passing around the media through channels causes other areas within the filter to have stagnant, non-moving, oxygen-deprived water.
Areas within the filter that don’t pass oxygenated water become anaerobic (oxygen deprived) and encourage pathogenic species of bacteria like Aeromonas and Pseudomonas to proliferate inside the waterfall filter and eventually in the pond. This can result in sick, diseased, and/or dying fish.
This is why fish disease is relatively high in typical water garden ponds compared to traditional koi ponds. Koi pond filters are back-flushable, typical "Pad-&-Media-Bag" style waterfall filters are not. All Hydro Vortex™ waterfall filters come standard with a bottom drain for backwashing and easy water changes.

Ordinary medium waterfall filters use filter pads inside them. They also require you to purchase additional media such as lava rock to aid in filtration and to hold the filter pads in place. When researching medium waterfall filters - take note of what type of media comes with it - and it you're required to purchase additional media.
Just look at how you will have to clean the filter pads! You will have to pull them out of the filter and use high pressure water to clean them. They will be heavy and very smelly! But first you will have to remove the even heavier dirty bags of lava rock!
