Non-Fish-Friendly Liner Gasket Weir Doors
Typical large pond kits have a combination weir door and liner gasket flange. The gasket flange part attaches the pond liner to the pond skimmer. The weir door part enhances pond skimming. This is how it is done with typical large pond kits ….. but should it be?
First of all, let’s examine the first part: Liner gasket flange
- What is it?
- What does it do?
- Why is it needed?
Simple questions. Here are the simple answers:
- 1. A liner gasket flange is a piece of material that will hold pond liner to a pond skimmer
- 2. The flange locks the liner to the skimmer with 12 or more screws
- 3. Liner will not stick to a pond skimmer without the flange
Kind of a “no-brainer” …. or is it?
- How do you attach it?
- What could go wrong?
- What would happen? ….. We’re glad you asked.
- Liner gasket flanges require a dozen screws or more and grommets to attach the liner gasket flange (the grommet is what the screws get screwed into)
- As the pond ages and settles with ground movement from “freeze-thaw” cycles, and varying moisture levels in the soil due to seasons … the liner will sag and stretch one or more of the dozen or so holes in the liner caused by the screws holding the conventional liner gasket flange in place
- If the screws holding the liner gasket flange are aluminum – as is the case with most medium pond kits (a price reducing measure), the screws will corrode rather quickly and cause leaks
- A leak between the pond liner and pond skimmer will cause even more settling … which will cause even more leaking
- Pond leaks cost lost of money in water replacement, and even more in leak correction
Look closely at the above left photos. (Roll over the photo to see the second photo). This is a pond skimmer that was leaking due to corrosion of the aluminum grommets. You can clearly see the corrosion of the aluminum gromets.
This pond owner was tired with this leaking pond skimmer and paid us for a "Skimmer-ectomy". The pond owner paid for the cheap pond skimmer and the contractor that installed it - then paid us to remove it and replace it with a HydroClean™ pond skimmer. That cheaper pond skimmer really isn't cheaper after all .... is it? "You get what you pay for!" A cheaper price usually means a cheaper quality product.

Unlike typical large pond waterfall kits with pond skimmers that use a weir door faceplate with a dozen of aluminum screws and grommets to secure pond liner to the skimmer, the Piper locks pond liner to itself, or remote installation pipe with a rubber collar and just one Stainless Steel nut on the Stainless Steel collar clamp. This connection is totally leak proof!
This drastically reduces the installation time, as well as frustration. The typical pond skimmer faceplate screws penetrate the pond liner in a dozen small holes that can eventually leak when they tear open due to liner settling over time. The HydroClean™ liner collar prevents these type of leaks.
Typical Large Kits with Pond-Side Pond Skimmers Ruin the Look of the Pond
No matter the brand: Aquascape, Easy Pro, Atlantic, Pond Builder, Savio, Little Giant, Danner, Proline, American Pond … the list goes on and on …. their large pond kits ALL require that you disrupt the look of your pond with a “pond-side” pond skimmer.
